 |
| This Basilica is one of
the most important centres of catholic peregrination. |
| It is said that the
Virgin Mary came to Zaragoza to tell the apostle Santiago that he had to build
a chapel in the Virgin Mary's honour. In the Basilica Goya's works stands out.
The basilica is of Barroque design. There is a museum called "El Pilarista
"that houses the diversity of gowns and jewels donated to the virgin in the XVI
and XX century. Also, you can see lots of sketches of the cupolas of the
Basilica, two of the cupolas were painted by Goya. |
| LA SEO CATHEDRAL
|
 |
| The Pilar was the first
Christian cathedral constructed in Zaragoza. It is also known as "El Salvador".
It was built on the ancient ground that was occupied by the Roman forum, the
Visigoth church and the Muslim mosque. La Seo has suffered a diversity of
extensions, restorations, and changes of face throughout its time. So there are
a lot of architectual styles, from the Roman to the Neo-classical living side
by side. This makes La Seo of special historic and artistic interest. |
| THE SANTA
ENGRACIA CHURCH |
 |
| This building was an
ancient monastery. Its walls are decorated with the images of the Catholic
Kings. The interior has a crypt where various relics of Santa Engracia and some
martyrs are kept. |
| THE SAINT ISABEL
CHURCH |
 |
| The processions that
represent the agony of Jesus on the cross leave from this church. It was built
in honour of Saint Isabel of Portugal. The majority of churches and religious
schools have their own fraternity. |
| The Saint Isabel church
has the fraternities of the "Santo Sepulchre" and "The Blood of Christ" that is
in charge of the collection of the corpses of the poor people. |
| There are more
fraternities that are important such as "Jesus tied a column" that represents
Jesus when he was whipped, "The Jesuits" that represents the pain of the virgin
Mary when Jesus was crucified, "The Seven Words" that show the seven words in
Spanish - nine words in English that Jesus said on the cross before dying. |
