| THE BIG
HEADS |
| In these traditional
festivals of Aragon, we couldn't miss out the "Big-heads", some enormous heads
made of paper Mache that people from village clubs use to make the parade more
amusing. These people, who wear these artificial heads, represent the nine
big-heads that chase children with whips. They try to catch the older ones who
run around them and enjoy the chase. Every year we celebrate the parade of
Giants and Big-heads in the different areas of the city. The giants are also
paper Mache figures with people inside who handle them and their actions,
making them walk, dance and twirl. |
| This parade is
traditional in Aragon. There is a Zarzuela; it is a type of song from Aragon,
about Giants and Big-heads, which explains the names of the characters of paper
Mache from the parade. This particular Zarzuela is called "Giants and
Big-heads" and its name was given to it in honour to the people from Aragon
because we are stubborn, but have big, open hearts. |
| The Giants can change
from one area to another but the Big-heads are always the same: |
| "The Morico"
who is a black boy with a colourful cap. |
| "The Pilara"
who is a popular artist from Saragossa and is the most modern
figure. |
| "The torero"
who represent this Spanish guild that has so many fans in our
country. |
| "The Tuerto"
who represents a man with only one eye. |
| "The
Verrugón" who represents a normal man with a big wart in his
face. |
| "The Boticario"
who represents the pharmacists and all the health guilds. |
| "The Robaculeros"
who hasn't got any special characteristic apart from the one of being a
Big-Head. |
| "The Forano"
and "The Forana" who represent a popular marriage. |
| All these characters
form part of the popular culture of Aragon. |
| LOS
CABEZUDOS |
| En nuestras fiestas del
pilar no podían faltar los "cabezudos", unas enormes cabezas de
cartón-piedra que utilizan los miembros de las peñas para animar
los desfiles. Estas cabezas representan nueve cabezudos que se encargan de
perseguir a los niños con látigos; al contrario que la costumbre
de otras ciudades o fiestas donde se lanzan caramelos al aire o se regalan
juguetes al azar a los niños de la ciudad. |
| Todos los años
se celebra el desfile de cabezudos y gigantes por la ciudad; los gigantes son
también figuras de cartón-piedra dentro de las cuales se meten
jóvenes y las manejan desde el interior. Este desfile es toda una
tradición en Aragón, incluso se ha hecho una zarzuela
(género típico española) sobre gigantes y cabezudos cuya
moraleja explica el nombre de los personajes del desfile. Esta zarzuela se
llama "Gigante y Cabezuda" y su nombre fue dado en honor a los aragoneses que
somos tozudos y cabezones pero con un corazón gigante. Los gigantes
varían de unos barrios a otros pero los cabezudos siempre son los
mismos: |

representa a un personaje de raza negra con una colorida gorra. |
| "La Pilara" que
representa a una popular artista del siglo pasado y que es el personaje
más moderno. |
| "El Torero" que
representa a este gremio español con mucha afición en nuestra
ciudad. |

representa a un campesino al que le falta un ojo. |
| "El Verrugón"
que representa a un hombre corriente con una verruga en la cara muy
llamativa. |
| "El Boticario"
que representa un poco a todos los gremios relacionados con la
sanidad. |
| "El Robaculeros"
sin ninguna característica especial excepto las propias de un
cabezudo. |
| "El Forano y la
Forana" que representan a un matrimonio popular. |
| Todos estos personajes
forman parte de la cultura popular de Aragón. |
