Four Spanish students have come to stay in England for five days, they have come from Zaragoza, a city in the north-east of Spain. These students are 14 and 15 years old and they go to 'The English School.' They are staying with English students from 'Westwood High School' in Leek. Marta Miñana is staying at Victoria Deavall's house; Pablo Alcolea is staying at Kim Mellor-ward; Gregorio Portella at Natasha Maxfield's house and Clara Mansilla at Kerry Lyford's. We are very happy that we can share this work and friendship experience.
We have come from Zaragoza, a city in the north- east of Spain. We are between 14 and 15 years old and we are very happy that we can come here and share this experience with our English partners.
Our project is based on English and Spanish Traditions and festivals. We are concentrating on the traditions at Christmas.
ENGLISH TRADITIONS.
On about the 5th December, Christmas trees are placed inside the house and decorated with colourful lights and decorations. A letter is written to Santa Clause and in Supermarkets there are post boxes, which you put your letter in and Santa Clause writes back. On the 24th December Santa Clause is said to climb down the chimney and leaves the Christmas presents under the tree. On the same night Christmas stockings are hung traditionally on the fireplace and Santa Clause fills them with small presents. On the fireplace a drink of wine is left for Santa to drink, a carrot is left and a mince-pie for Santa to eat. On Christmas morning the presents are opened and most people eat a Roast turkey dinner with vegetables. For dessert Christmas Pudding covered in Brandy and custard. On the evening of the 31st December families join together and have a party. At 12 o'clock children carry a piece of coal in through the front door and out through the back door, this takes all the bad luck outside. Then the family joins hands and sings Auld Lang Syne.
SPANISH TRADITIONS.
Christmas begins on the 24th of December. This night, Christmas eve everyone prepares very special dinner and all the family joins together to eat dinner. This night is the most important thing for Christmas in Spain.
On the 25th of this month, Christmas day, the family joins together again to have lunch.
On the 31st we celebrate The New Years Eve. We have dinner, and at 12o' clock at night we eat the 12 grapes. This is a very special tradition that everyone in Spain does it. When the clock strikes 12 we must have swallowed the 12 grapes, one for each strike. If we manage to swallow all the grapes we will have good luck next year.
The night from the 5th to the 6th the Three Kings come from the Orient with their camels and lots of presents for everyone.
Every member of the family puts a shoe on the windowsill and the Three King move the shoe onto the floor and leaves the person's presents around their shoe.In the morning of the 6th we open all the presents and children spend all day playing with their new toys.
Marta - I think that Christmas is a happy holiday and doesn't have the meaning of religion that had before. I love Christmas because it is a happy time that I spend with all my family and friends
Victoria - I love Christmas because everywhere is decorated nice and everyone is happy. But i don't think that Christmas is based on religion as much as it should be.
This work was completed in England when the Spanish students were visiting Leek.
